Why don't people let their kids read Harry Potter?

I just want to hear what people say, because I have heard that some parents want to ban Harry Potter from schools and such, but I have never actually heard WHY? I mean, the whole point of the books is that even love can triumph over magic. Also, please only answer if you have actually read the books.

A lot of religious folks don't want anyone reading anything that deals with good and evil except the Bible. It's as if they have such little regard for people's intelligence that no one else is going to be able to tell pure fiction from truth (so, of course, you can only read what they tell you you can). This goes for the movies too. But most people are smart enough to know that stories like Harry Potter (and the Golden Compass) and others are just fairy tales, just entertainment and are not real. These people do miss the big moral lesson, as you pointed out, that love triumphs over everything, that the good and true of heart overcome evil. And life is not always safe and gentle and sometimes we have to fight for what is right. People die (as in the stories) and get hurt and lives are changed. When those people start preaching about don't let your kids read HP, I always feel like saying, "oh, ye of little faith." If you've taught your children and parishioners well, you should not fear that reading (or viewing) a fantasy story will compromise their beliefs. I feel kind of sorry for kids growing up in such a household because they are not being allowed to develope their imagination and will be very very very boring adults who probably never have an original thought. However, the publicity probably helps sell the books %26 movies so maybe it isn't such a bad thing. I was not intending to go to see the Golden Compass since I loved the books so much but now, with all the bad press, I think I will go.
